With the harness racing action around the two year olds just starting to heat up, one of the most eagerly awaited clashes between the two unbeaten sons of Somebeachsomewhere In Our Waikiki Beach and Goodtime Sammy will now not happen this season after Goodtime Sammy sustained a major leg injury in his Australian Pacing Gold semi final on Saturday night.
Goodtime Sammy gave a powerhouse display in his semi final, charging to an early lead and holding the opposition at bay with ease in a very quick 1:54
That win took Goodtime Sammy's record to four from four and looked to have set up a great final against the other unbeaten colt in Waikiki Beach who is also four from four.
However part owner Ian Slater confirmed the worst when spoken to yesterday.
" After the race we were concerned about him and took him to Sydney University and had his foot x-rayed and that showed that he has a broken pedal bone," a disconsolate Slater said.
" We think that he sustained the injury with 350 metres to go yet he still ran his last 400 metres in 27
"They have told us that Goodtime Sammy has a 60-70% chance of racing again."
"If he does race again it won't be for at least twelve months," Ian said.
As Ian is also the breeder of Goodtime Sammy, he has taken the setback quite hard but he remains optimistic about the future of his star pacer.
"I think he is a very good horse and thought he had the potential to be the best two year old in Australasia this season."
"I'm convinced if he gets back to the track, he will be a star," Ian said.
Harnesslink wishes Goodtime Sammy a speedy recovery and looks forward to seeing him back on the racetrack in the future.
