Golden Grove professional harness racing trainer Paul Cavallaro has an eye for a good youngster….
Three years ago he purchased an Art Major colt out of the Ready To Run sale in Sydney for a cool $50,000. The colt, now racing as Culture King, has won 17 races to date including the SA St Leger and two at Menangle and more than $120,000 in stakes.
In 2019 Paul purchased another Art Major colt, Artillery, on behalf of a 12-person syndicate after it had been passed in at the Australian Pacing Gold Sydney Sale.
He won six races in his first campaign including the Southern Cross Final and SA Lordship Stakes and is regarded as a hot favourite to capture the SA 2YO of the Year award.
At last year’s South Australian Yearling Sale, Paul paid the top price of $43,000 for an Art Major colt out of the successful Bettor’s Delight mare The Stunning One. Offered by Victoria’s Nixon Bloodstock, the colt’s dam ranked as a half-sister to five sub 2:00 performers including the ‘Cups King’ Phoenix Prince and belongs to the family of top juveniles such as Part Of Glory, Triumph Lad and Swishinon.
And, while Paul has yet to put the acid test to the colt named Artbreaker, he is “very happy with him” at this stage.
“He’s on his third preparation and he feels like he’s got something there to give,” Paul said. “He seems to be coming to hand nicely.”
“I’ll probably take him to the trials in two to three weeks.”
