The $100,000 William C. Connors Memorial Trot for 3-year-olds was raced on a steamy night at Hazel Park Raceway in suburban Detroit. A field of six faced starter Adam Brownlee, including the new harness racing track record holder and favorite, Turtle Express.
Just before the start, elimination winner E L Rock was off-stride, but recovered to miss the start by five lengths. Turtle Express went right to the front with Soulful Delight securing the pocket trip. The lone Michigan-bred, Magglio, started the outer flow just after a :28.1 first quarter. Just short of the half, Magglio and the favored Turtle Express battled with a recovered E L Rock, who was moving well second-over.
Soulful Delight continued to get the golden trip in the pocket. To a half in :57.3 and three-quarters in 1:26, the first-over Magglio started to fade. E L Rock was urged three-wide but Turtle Express began to let out a notch followed, closely by the fresh legs of the pocket-sitter, Soulful Delight. It was a two horse breakaway in the stretch, with Soulful Delight making the most of his perfect trip to grind away at Turtle Express in the final strides.
Soulful Delight is a 3-year-old Kentucky-bred gelding byand out of the mare Bream Of Becca. The gelding is owned by DM Stables of Florida and is trained by Bob Young. Soulful Delight picked up his ninth career win in just 20 starts, and edged his earnings over $200,000. He was given a perfect drive by Darrell Wright, who is a fan favorite on the Michigan Circuit.
The mile went in 1:55.1.
