It's official Stig is one of our greatest ever. With all his injury problems and subsequent multiple retirements to come back and win the 2012 National Trot in record time and in the process beat a true harness racing champion in I Can Doosit is an unbelievable effort.
The official time for the race was a scintillating 3.21.35 for the 2700m mobile. From the dispatch at the gate it was stable mate Dr Hook who sped to the lead whilst Mark Purdon on the favourite I Can Doosit took hold of his charge to make sure he didn't lose his feet early. As Purdon drifted off the fast early pace eventual winner Stig and driver David Butt saw their opportunity to take the lead which was always there for them with stable mate Dr Hook in front.
From there Butt applied the pressure to a parked out I Can Doosit and the signs were ominous as Mark Purdon and I Can Doosit decided to take cover behind Stig inside the final 300 metres looking to sling shot the 10 year old in the straight but it wasn't to be.
David Butt the master of the understatement took the win in his stride.
"He's a great old horse. When Mark didn't go off the gate with I Can Doosit I thought that was my chance to take the race to him and apply some pressure in front. From there I just hoped we could out stay him" said a calm David Butt.
I Can Doosit was valiant in defeat in running second and Sovereignty ran his usual stellar race for third.
As an observation with a lap to go I Can Doosit looked a touch noddy going through the straight so in my opinion he wasn't his usual brilliant self. On the flip side for the Stig camp it was a memorable win that will be talked about for years to come.
