Camille and Jason Brewer - win the $80,000 Princess Stakes final at Woodbine

The Rodney Duford-trained Camille beat out nine other harness racing sophomore fillies in the $80,000 Princess Stakes final at Woodbine, Friday night. Itstimeformetofly (Jack Moiseyev) was first from the gate, but as the field entered the first turn, the bettor's choice, Mater Deo (Mark MacDonald) claimed the lead through fractions of :26.3 and :55.2.

At the half, Camille (Jason Brewer) came first up and applied pressure to Mater Deo into the final turn. The duo battled for the lead as they hit the three-quarters pole in 1:24.3.

Mater Deo rolled off stride into the stretch, handing over the lead to Camille who won by two and three-quarter lengths in 1:52.4, a new lifetime mark. Artic Byrd (Scott Zeron) got up for second and Itstimeformetofly was third.

Driver Brewer wasn’t surprised with the outcome of the race.

“She raced very well,” said Brewer. “She raced good last week, but didn’t get a very good trip. It was her first start. I was confident in her, if she got a good trip.”

Duford shared Brewer’s confidence.

“I thought it was between those two [Mater Deo and Camille], but I was hoping I was the lucky one,” he laughed.

Camille paid $9.10 to win as the second choice. The homebred daughter of Camluck-Art Of Design has a lifetime record of 5-1-2 in 13 starts and has increased her bankroll to $138,580 for owner and breeder Larry Pollard of Harrow, Ont.

Duford plans to race his three-year-old filly in the Ontario Sires Stakes program over the summer. If all goes according to plan, her next start will be at Western Fair on Friday, May 20 in one of the first O.S.S. races of the 2011 season.
