A nine-horse trot was featured in Billings competition at Plainridge Racecourse on Labor Day Monday and when the race was declared official, Bob 'Rapid Rail' Krivelin took home all the marbles when he guided Budlightning to a 1:58.1 victory over Guiding Light, who was in rein to Dave 'Steady As' Yarock.
Krivelin set sails right from the get-go and hustled Budlightning to the lead but they were challenged by Mark Eaton and Gate Keeper. Krivelin didn't give an inch and kept Eaton on the limb in a :58.2 half.
Up the backside, with a host of trotters trying to improve their positions, Gate Keeper faded and Krivelin sat cool as Budlightning kept to his work. They were still in front at the third stanza with trotters two and three deep chasing them on the final turn.
But as the field scooted for home it was Budlightning showing to way and at the wire Krivelin pumped his arm as his mount was 1 ¼ length better than runner-up Guiding Light and Yarock as the announcer shouted " Krivelin, this Bud's for You". Third place went to Mega Man driven by Bob "Blue ‘N" Gray.
ier this season Krivelin had been chasing Yarock for the point lead and not too many weeks ago the axis shifted. Now it's Yarock who's chasing Krivelin.
For Krivelin , a food purveyor in NYC, it was his sixth Billings triumph of the season and now his 101 points leads the Eastern Region. Yarock's second place finish pumped his point total up to 90. Currently in third place with 79 points is Tony "the Capo" Verruso who was idle at Plainridge. Bob "the Headhunter" Hechkoff's 75 points ranks him fourth on the leaderboard while Peter Gerry, with 73 points, rounds out the top five in the East Region.
Steve "You're Never Too" Oldford's 57 points is far and away the best in the Midwest Region and he leads runner-up Bob "Lumberman" Troyer by 36 points. Mike "the Doo Wop Doc" Caston is in third place with 19 points two better than John "Johnny Camps" Campagnuolo's total. Dein" the Jupiter Gem" Spriggs shares fifth place with Michelle "the Belle" Ruvola and Dave "Linemaster" Ehrenberg each with 15 points.
Next action in the seven-month series will be at Sciota Downs on September 7th followed by a trip to the Canadian Maritimes on Saturday and Sunday.
