While the Southern Cross Features were the highlight for the day prizemoney wise the most popular win with the big crown in attendance was the victory of superstar pacer Smoken Up in the Free For All event.
Having his final SA run, the 11yo farewelled his local fans in style able to push through early and find the front from gate 8 and it was pretty much all over after that holding off a gallant Come On Frank who ran a super race in 2nd spot with Astronaut back in 3rd.
The win was his 74th overall with his prizemoney now over $3,600,000.
Globe Derby has certainly been a happy hunting ground for him over the years with his first two runs at the track back both victory’s the first in the $15,000 Barastock Cup before taking out the $100,000 SA Cup a week later back in 2008.
His next return to Adelaide wasn’t until 2010 when he put up a big performance to finish 2nd behind Mister Zion in the Cup before winning the 2011 and 2012 editions, the later with Greg Sugars in the sulky.
No doubt the past two runnings of the Cup have been super races with two epic battles with fellow Victorian Caribbean Blaster with a tough win back in 2013 before a solid 2nd behind Caribbean Blaster in this year’s running back in January.
In all he won four SA cups at the track and the roar of the crowd during Sundays race certainly showed his popularity with local fans and no doubt he will be missed in next year’s running of the big race.
