KIWI hotshot Border Control showed he is the horse to beat in the $200,000 Form 700 Chariots Of Fire in two weeks' time with a dashing display to win tonight's $50,000 Hondo Grattan Stakes at Tabcorp Park Menangle.
While Queensland's up-and-coming four-year-old Brigadier Bronski led, as expected, the race soon looked to be headed for a classic finish when the big three in betting, Border Control, Brigadier Bronski and Majestic Mach went head and head turning for home.
Surprisingly, it was the tough Brigadier Bronski that was the first to surrender and it was left to Kevin Seymour's highly-rated Majestic Mach to try and chase down Border Control.
But the-trained New Zealander carried too many guns and premier reinsman was able to sool him to the line for a two and a half metre win in a slick 1:53.2 mile rate.
With all three placegetters expected to contest the Chariots Of Fire, it is already shaping as one of the clashes of the season with the likes of Chilli Palmer, Franco Nelson, Elios and Nowitzki already in the race.
Even two weeks out from the race and with the rest of the field undecided, Border Control will be the favourite to add to his already imposing record.
And you can be sure champion New Zealand horsemanwill have no problem thanking for his efforts before replacing him in the sulky for the four-year-old feature.
