Inter Dominion Heat 5, 2014, Forever Gold

STAR Queensland mare gave the girls a representative in the Inter Dominion final in two weeks when she led all the way to capture the fifth heat, this time at Albion Park.

Perfectly drawn in gate one, trainer-driver Darren Weekes had to pull out all stops to hold the lead out of the mobile gate when Avonnova almost crossed to the front.

Yet Forever Gold was able to kick up and just hold onto the lead and thereafter Weekes was able to dictate terms to a nicety in the last lap.

The well-backed Field Officer (Mat Neilson) made a brief dash in the straight but his run petered out and Sign To Inverell, who had carted Field Officer into the race and looked beaten on the turn, kicked back to finish second - although it was all to no avail as there was only one invitation to the Inter Dominion final from the Queensland heat.

And the six-year-old mare many rate as one of the best of the fairer sex in Australasia, Forever Gold, is on her way to the Inter Dominion final.

The winner rated 1:56 with a last half of 55.8 seconds in an impressive - and dogged - performance.
