In Leg 2 of the Fox Valley Flan Series, it looked to be a one-horse affair as trainer Roger Welch had a pair in the race, and his Victor’s Pursuit looked to be too tough to beat as the three-year-old trotter was sent off at 2-5.
In the end though, it was his other entrant who got the job done, thanks to the favorite’s costly break.
y on in the race, longshot Kan Fancy set the early fractions, covering the first quarter in :28.4 and the half in :58.1.
Flanked by Begin the Bubbly and Victor’s Pursuit, Kan Fancy turned for home on top after three-quarters in 1:28 but that was the end of her lead as heavily-favored Victor’s Pursuit took control.
Up a length in the stretch, Victor’s Pursuit looked to be home free, but she broke stride in the final 16th and was quickly gobbled up.
Benefiting from the break was the other Welch entrant as Arcola and driver Tim Tetrick came flying from the back of the pack on his way to the victory.
Begin the Bubbly held on to finish second while Silhouette Star was third.
Following the break, Victor’s Pursuit crossed the wire for fourth.
Arcola covered the mile in 1:57.2
Owned by Turndorf Racing LLC and trained by Roger Welch, Arcola returned $12.00, $5.80, and $3.40. Begin the Bubbly came back $18.20 and $8.80 while Silhouette Star returned $5.60 to show.
The win was the third on the year for Arcola as he earned $4,500 for the win from the $9,000 event. The richest horse in the race, Arcola boosted his career earnings to $217,307.
