Accident mars fourth race at Freehold Raceway

Freehold, NJ – An accident that involved horses and drivers falling to the track and four horses unable to finish the race marred the fourth race $5,700 pace at Freehold Raceway Friday.

As the field was on the final turn after the three-quarter mile marker, Matt’s Smokin Lil, driven by Jeff Gregory, was first-over on the outside when his horse fell to the track. They were immediate run over by Fantail Hanover and driver Catello Manzi, who was racing second-over. Then those two were run into by the trailing horses My Op Doll (Vicent Ginsburg) and Look Siera (Jack Baggitt, Jr.)

Both Catello Manzi and Jeff Gregory were taken by ambulance to local hospitals. Manzi was taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center and was reported to have suffered fractures to both sides of his pelvis, Gregory was taken to Centra State Medical Center with a broken left elbow.

Both  Vincent Ginsburg and Jack Baggitt, Jr. received bruises but did not go to the hospital.

All four horses involved in the accident were able to walk off the track on their power.

The race was won by Superstar Dream (Eric Abbatiello) in 1:57.
