The secret to a long and happy life is a lot simpler than you think, according to Rockbank’s Alan McLean. A well-known harness racing trainer in the west, Mr McLean celebrated his 100th birthday on Sunday, with the love of his life, Eunice, 91.

The couple live in the same home they built more than 70 years ago.

Mrs McLean said they were both keen dancers, who met in 1943 at a dance in Melbourne and married the following year.

The couple never had children but have spent their lives travelling, dancing, horse training and gardening. The couple this year also celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Mr McLean’s birthday was acknowledged by Harness Racing Victoria last Friday at Tabcorp Park with a race named in his honour.
