'The heart of Australian harness racing, Sydney's Bankstown Paceway, is delighted to award our greatest accolade - honorary life membership - to former committeeman and standardbred horse trainer Anthony Gorrell for over two decades of dedicated, distinguished and devoted service to the Bankstown Harness Racing and Agricultural Society,' Bankstown Paceway president Les Bentley has told Harnesslink.
'Last night's (Wednesday, December 18th, 2013) Committee meeting unanimously voted to confer our race club's highest honour on Tony Gorrell, who retired from the board last month (November 2012) after more than ten years of faithful service,' Mr Bentley said.
'Joining the Bankstown harness racing club on 10 April 1993, there is barely a month, a week or even a day when you can keep Tony away from the track where he fosters his two greatest passions - training his beloved horses and volunteering for the odd job or two which no one else can quite get done,' the president said.
'In 2003, Tony was first elected to our board - at a pivotal and challenging time for our club. Today, that board salutes his service to our club, our track and major events committees, his enduring energy and, most importantly, the sound counsel and advice which he provided to our fellow committeemen,' Mr Bentley added.
