It was a narrow but successful raid on the Wangaratta Stock Foods & Food Supplies 2014 Pacing Cup for Tim Bolitho and Arber.
Sitting parked for much of the race from barrier four, the seven-year-old gelding was made to work in the early stages before being guided through opening fractions of 31.1secs and 31.3secs to open the final mile.
Driven by Greg Sugars, Arber found the top with a lap to go and wound up with a 30.1sec third quarter before rattling home in 27.9secs as he held second favourite Smudge Bromac at bay by 1.6 metres with all I can by a further eight metres in third.
The overall mile rate for the race was 1:59.5 with the winner breaking through for his 16th victory in 71 starts.
The Frank Dimentz Jewellers Wangaratta Trotters Cup went to El Paco for Joe Attard.
In another heart-stopping finish, the five-year-old proved too good for more the more highly rated pair Tsonga and Theywannacallmesue in a mile rate of 2:07.9.
Racing to his 10th overall success, the son of Yankee Paco scored his third win of the calendar year after a pair of victories in early January.
