One of the fastest men alive - Jamaica's Asafa Powell.

Asafa is a confirmed starter in this year's Stawell Gift. One of the biggest names in athletics is among the field for one of the iconic race names on the Australian sporting calendar. Sadly for the Stawell Athletic Club marketing team it's Asafa the harness horse, not the Jamaican sprinter.

The race is Friday night's Australia Post Stawell Easter Gift Sprint at Tabcorp Park, not the famous footrace on Easter Monday.

The 1720-metre scamper is the feature event of a Stawell Harness Racing Club meeting at the Melton circuit and Asafa's driver and co-trainer John Caldow said it was an obvious target for the gelding.

"The horse was named after Asafa Powell, so naturally this race caught our attention and it would be fitting if he could win the Stawell Gift," Caldow said.

"He's not fastest horse in the world, but he does hold a couple of track records and hopefully he can add a Stawell Gift to his list of achievements."

The six-year-old son of Panorama has won 12 of his 62 starts including back-to-back wins at Friday night's venue in January and February.

He has drawn prominently in barrier four for Friday night's event, which will be run at 9.40pm.
