It was a case of what might have been for underrated New Zealand pacer Our Awesome Armbro. The Geoff Small trained 6-year-old received a touch of karma at Parklands Raceway on the Gold Coast tonight (Saturday) when winning the Group Two $75,000 Interdominion Consolation Final.

A fortnight earlier the Armbro Operative entire blew all chances of qualifying for tonight's $1m Grand Final when breaking and losing a hundred metres at the start. He then finished a gallant second behind Karloo Mick in last week's second round of heats. That left him one point shy of qualifying for the big one.

"It's a shame he had his ‘idiot cap' on that first night. I can tell you my brother Philip wasn't happy because he may have driven him in the Final. Tonight is a bit of justice you could say. I'm rapt for Geoff and the connections," said driver David Butcher.

Geoff is Patumahoe trainer Geoff Small, who a race earlier trained Zenad to a 1.8 metre victory in the $15,000 Australian Pacing Gold Pace. He later trained Changeover to a six-metre fourth in the Interdominion Grand Final. Butcher drove all three but it was the Consolation win that brought the biggest smile of the night.

"They went real quick out of the gate and weren't able to lead (from three). When we did get a sprint at them in the straight he dug deep and did well to get up. It was a good effort. He was unlucky not to make the Final and proved that tonight," Butcher said.

Fleur De Lil (Luke McCarthy) led at the bell with Report For Duty (Anthony Butt) parked and Cincinnati Kid (Mark Peace) three wide without cover. Mister Swinger (Geoff Webster) sat in the trail while Butcher and Our Awesome Armbro were hemmed in the one-one.

In the home straight Butcher managed to get a suck into the race and came down the outside five-wide to get up in the shadows of the post to beat Ohoka Utah and Tony Herlihy by a head. His winning time for the 2100m mobile was 2:32.3 (mile rate: 1:56.8). Sectionals: 29.8, 30, 28.3, and 30 seconds. Cincinnati Kid was just over two metres back in third.

Awesome Armbro has now won 17 of his 63 starts and placed 20 times. His stake earnings for the Auckland Trotting Club's 2005 Syndicate are just over $540,000.
