In an exciting coup, the Ballarat Club have announced an innovative new two-year-old race to compliment John Slack Memorial Trotters Cup night.
In the heart of the two-year-old season, the Hertz Ballarat Rising Star will be run for the first time on May 31 as the perfect lead in to the Vicbred Super Series and Breeders Crown later in the year.
Worth $20,505, the race is positioned to quickly become one of the major targets for trainers around the state.
Ballarat Chief Executive Paul Rowse was thrilled with the exciting addition to the calendar.
“We are very grateful to be able to implement this race in conjunction with Harness Racing Victoria, it really adds something extra to our racenight on May 31 and we are looking forward to some exciting nominations,” Rowse said.
“When you’ve got horses coming through the Vicbred Home Grown Classic series, I’ve got no doubt they will be looking for a race and this fits in perfectly.
“We’ve modelled the race a bit on the AFL Rising Star so hopefully we can see a horse or two come through the race and go on to have a big future, much like a lot of the Rising Star winners in the AFL have.”
The night will also be the last leg of the Young Drivers Challenge which kicks off at Shepparton two days earlier with some of Australia’s best emerging talent competing for the honours.
