Thursday's Ballarat meeting will signal the Victorian return of champion four-year-old Lombo Pocket Watch. The Paul Fitzpatrick-trained gun will kick off his quest for a clean sweep of the Vicbred Super Series Group 1 finals when he steps out in the fourth heat of the 2008 series for four-year-old entires and geldings.

The superstar son of Jet Laag, a winner of 32 of his 42 starts and more than $1.3 million in prizemoney, is this year striving to emulate Vicbred Super Series wins in his two and three-year-old series.

hursday will be his first visit to the races since an unlucky end to his summer campaign in Perth when finishing fourth in the Group 1 WA Pacing Cup at Gloucester Park on January 11.

he venue for Thursday’s race is the same one that Lombo Pocket Watch had his most recent Victorian run. That was in last year’s 3YO Breeders Crown final when he was also luckless and had to settle for fourth placing behind Changeover.

river Gavin Fitzpatrick is drawn to make his own luck aboard Lombo Pocket Watch on Thursday, having landed the coveted “pole” position.

oincidentally, the horse that finished runner-up to Changeover in that Breeders Crown final, the Dean Braun-trained The Gunstar, is also engaged in Thursday’s heat.

he Gunstar, who will roll from gate six, has only had one start since the Breeders Crown, for a comfortable first-up win over Veranjee at Cranbourne on April 9.

eranjee contested this afternoon’s Vicbred Super Series heat at Moonee Valley and finished a narrow second to Luv Tha Aces Lombo.

he fourth $8000 Vicbred Super Series heat, to be run over 2200m, opens the Ballarat program and will be run at 12.37pm.

ombo Pocket Watch, The Gunstar and company will be striving for a place in one of the $20,000 semi finals, to be run at Moonee Valley on Friday, May 16. The $100,000 Group 1 final will be held at the Valley seven days later.
