Harness racing driver Gilles Barrieau was dominant in the two-year-old Williamson Stakes as he captured three of the four divisions contested at Fredericton Raceway on Monday afternoon.
Barrieau guided K D Overdrive in the opener and equalled the track record for the fastest mile ever paced by a freshman pacer. It turned out to be the fastest mile ever for geldings at the half-mile oval.
Owned by the Downey Stables of Quispamsis, N.B the son of Camyistic thrilled on lookers with a 1:56.2 victory. That equalled Clinton Debriefed and his long standing record that has stood since 2002.
Jackson K Down is now six for seven lifetime after a 1:58.1 triumph for the Downey Stables in the second colt division. Gilles other win came with a horse from his own as stable as Howmacscanasta captured a filly division for her Saint John connections.
There was a track record set by Todd Trites and Dixieland Lullaby as she set a new track standard for pacing fillies of 1:58 for Nova Scotia's Johnny Heffernan.
Both Trites and Barrieau were the driving stars of the afternoon as they each scored four-wins on the program, capturing eight of the ten races. Racing continues on Saturday as Fredericton Raceway plays host to the Bill Quigg stake, the Jennie and Joe Chippin Memorial and the Albert Goodine Memorial. Post time at 1:00 P.M.
