CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – She may have been placed first but Sodwana Bay earned the harness racing's lion's share of the top purse of the evening Thursday at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
The win in the $2,800 Fillies and Mares Open pace was part of a four-bagger for driver Gilles Barrieau on the evening card at the capital oval. Sodwana Bay finished second for trainer-driver Barrieau in the top event but was placed first after Berazzled (Driven by David Dowling) was set to second for a break past three-quarters. The amended time of the mile was 1:56.3 with Arc Light (Adam Merner) finishing third. Wayne MacRae of Nova Scotia and Howmac Farms Ltd., of North Wiltshire own Sodwana Bay.
Barrieau also won with Traces Of Purple (1:57.1) for trainer Robert Phillips, Mile Hill Willie (1:59.3) for Paul Morrison and with Clare Hall Hanover (1:58.2) from the Ron Matheson stable.
Leading driver Marc Campbell had a pair of winners on the night from his own stable as Live And Let Di won in 1:56.2 and former Maritime Champion Filly Forty Seven made her East Coast return a winning one in identical time.
