Try as he might, harness racing trainer Col Thomas is finding it harder to avoid the obvious comparison between his two stable stars.

One of his crop’s best performed freshmen in 2012, Business In Motion won 10 of his 15 two-year-old starts, including his first five outings.

The son of Courage Under Fire also filled the placings in the Vicbred Super Series and Tatlow Finals.

Business In Motion’s victories also include the popular Leeton Breeders’ Plate – a feature newcomer, Bettermatch, annexed last night.

Driven by Nathan Jack, Bettermatch accounted for Regal Nightshade and Chucky Balboa in 1:58.8 for the 1758 metres…Business In Motion captured the ‘Plate’ in 1:59.2.

The son of Kenneth J maintained his unbeaten record from three starts in the process.

“Bettermatch and is certainly doing everything Business In Motion did, but Business In Motion won 10 races at two,” Thomas said. “We’ll have to see how well Bettermatch goes on with it as the season progresses.

“At this stage he is right up there with Business In Motion. He’s got good speed and a bit of bottom too and I reckon he can win another good race or two before the season is out.”

Planning to give the colt an easy week, Thomas will then target the Sapling Stake at Tabcorp Park Menangle on February 7.

“He’ll have a few light days before I get him ready for a trip to Sydney for the Sapling,” Thomas said. “I think he will enjoy racing around the spacious track at Menangle.”

As if to make sure the ‘Johnny Come Lately’ remembers who’s boss, Business In Motion also scored at Leeton last night.

After working to the lead, the four-year-old beat No Tomorrow and In Runaway Bay in 1:59.1 for the 2147 metres.

“He’s gone well again,” Thomas said. “I will just keep racing him along before a possible trip to Melton for the Bonanza in February.”
