Camille, the lone million dollar winner in the field, showed her back class to a field of local mares in posting an impressive 1:52.1 triumph to win the $50,000 Laverne Hill Memorial Pace at Scioto Downs Saturday.
Driven by Chris Page, the duo waited early on as She’s Shocking (Kayne Kauffman) took the early lead with Radar Contact (Ronnie Wrenn, Jr.) in the garden spot but right after the opening quarter mile in :27.2, Page sent Camille to the front.
From that point on it was catch me if you can as Camille led the field past the half mile marker in :55.2 and the three-quarters in 1:23.4 as Native Dream (Josh Sutton) tried coming first-over in vain.
As they came down the stretch, Page urged his mare on and she responded, winning by two easy lengths.
Trained by Ron Burke, it was the first win in eight starts this year for Camille. The six-year-old mare by Camluck is owned by the Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Brucemi, M 1 Stable and J. Platt, III. She paid $4.00 to win as the even money favorite.
“We told (Chris) Page to drive her anyway he wanted to,” said Mickey Burke after the race. “Just go with her. That’s what he did and she raced good.”
