Anderson, IN – It was a lot better than a qualifying race, $25,000 better.
Captaintreacherous allowed a group of mainly local three-year-old to chase his heels as he led from start to finish at Hoosier Park Saturday night in winning the $50,000 Jenna’s Beach Boy Pace in 1:49.4.
It was a prep race for the 2012 Pacer of the Year and he will now head to Lexington’s Red Mile to compete against the best colts in the nation in the Grand Circuit.
Driven by Tim Tetrick there was little doubt at the start of race as Tetrick sent the “Captain” right to the front from post six. He cut fractions of :26.3, :55.4 and 1:23.3 while holding the field at bay. Duel In the Sun (Yannick Gingras) sat the two-hole trip, LB’s Alamaericanjoy (Matt Krieger) tried a first-over move in vain down the backstretch as no one could even hang close to Captaintreacherous.
Coming down the stretch Captaintreacherous pulled away from the field to win by six open lengths. Duel In The Sun was second with that’ll Be The ReI (Mike Micallef) third.
It should also be noted that the connections of Captraintreacherous are donating 20% of their earnings from Saturday’s race to assist the Animal Protection League, a local non-profit organization that finds homes for unwanted animals in the community.
Trained by Tony Alagna and owned by the Captaintreacherous Racing Stable of Versailles, Kentucky, it was the eighth win in nine starts this year for the son of Rocknroll Hanover. Sent off as the 1/9 favorite, the “Captain” paid just $2.10 to win.
“When we were approached by the track to bring him here,” Alagna explained, “It was just what we needed. We were going to just qualify him at the Red Mile. Tim and I have such strong Midwest roots and it was perfect to bring him here and showcase him before the people at Hoosier Park. We were looking for a mile like tonight to get ready for the Grand Circuit. It is so much better for a horse like him to have actual competition. We are very happy with his race tonight.”
