Once again Captaintreacherous showed true grit and racing heart as he held on by a half length over a sloppy track to capture the $500,000 Breeders Crown final for three-year-old pacing colts Saturday night at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs.
One of the feature races of the $5.6 million racing program, Captaintreacherous and driver Tim Tetrick went right to the lead from the rail at the start but had to give way to a determined Sunfire Blue Chip (Yannick Gringras) going to the opening quarter mile in :26.1.
But Tetrick would not sit in the two-hole and quarter moved Captaintreacherous right back to the front. As the field raced into the second turn, Sunshine Beach and driver John Campbell, who was on the outside from the start, kept moving up towards the leaders with Lucan Hanover (Dave Miller) following his outside flow at the half mile in an easy :55.2.
But no one could tell Sunshine Beach that he was parked for his life as continued to be well rated and kept in contention by John Campbell as the field raced down the backstretch to the three-quarter mile marker in 1:22.1.
Then on the final turn Tetrick pulled the ear plugs on Captaintreacherous and he seemed to begin to glide away from the field as they started down the stretch, but Sunshine Beach was not yet finished and with Lucan Hanover coming alongside, Captaintreacherous dug in once again as he always does in the stretch and went on to win by a half length with Sunshine Beach second and Lucan Hanover third.
“I would love to win by five but he just doesn’t race that way,” Tetrick said after the victory. “I put a lot of confidence in him. He lets them come to him but it is really hard to get by him, that’s for sure. Sunshine Beach is a great horse. You can see how good he is and how he did beat Captaintreacherous earlier this season. But tonight we got the best of him. He is just amazing. He does what he has to. If they were to go in 1:46, he would go in 1:46. He does what he has to to win.”
It was the sixth straight win and 12th victory in 13 starts this year for Captaintreacherous. The son of Somebeachsomewhere is trained by Tony Alagna and is owned by the Captaintreacherous Racing Stable of Versailles, KY. He paid $2.80 to win as the 2/5 betting favorite. With the $250,000 winner’s share of the purse now has career earnings of $2.792 million.
