Racing Queensland in conjunction with Albion Park Harness Racing Club and Centenary Classic, the leading Mercedes Benz dealer in Brisbane, have introduced a standout harness racing award that promotes the future of the industry in Queensland.

The vision behind this award is to encourage professionalism within the junior ranks of the sport of harness racing and thereby identify role models who will act as ambassadors.

This initiative has been spearheaded by harness racing’s generous benefactor and Albion Park HRC Chairman Kevin Seymour AM.

The Centenary Classic Mercedes Benz Young Achievers Award will be chosen each month from concession licensees campaigning at TAB race meetings in South-East Queensland by a panel of harness racing experts.

Two overall winners, one female and one male, will be selected from the 12 monthly winners at the end of the season. Drivers will only be eligible to win one month however overall season performances will be taken into consideration.

The two winners will receive the following:

  • Return trip to New Jersey in the USA courtesy of Centenary Classic Mercedes Benz;
  • A one month educational stay with a leading North American harness trainer that includes accommodation and meals;
  • Approved out of pocket expenses;
  • A driving helmet, colours, pants and an all-weather jacket that will all carry the sponsor’s logos courtesy of Racing Queensland.

Queensland Harness Racing Board Chairman Brad Steele said that it is vital the industry continues to invest in the emerging talent in the junior ranks.

“It’s great that the Queensland harness racing industry is able to be aligned with iconic brand and highly successful business, Centenary Classic Mercedes Benz,” Mr Steele said.

“The award will provide motivation for our concession licensees to improve their professionalism and help create role models for the future.”

Monthly winners will be advised at the conclusion of each month, with congratulations going to Narissa McMullen, the inaugural winner for September.

The Centenary Classic Mercedes Benz Young Achievers Award will be presented at the Queensland Harness Awards night in October 2014.
