Chantal Hal seized the lead in deep stretch to pull out a 1:53.2 victory in Thursday night's (June 10) $8,100 featured ninth harness racing event at Vernon Downs. Defending dash champ Jimmy Whittemore did the teaming as Chantal Hall drafted along behind the determined pace-setter Delightful Dancer through splits of :27.3, :56.4 and 1:25.2.

Still sitting in the cat bird's spot entering the stretch drive, the gritty 5-year-old dug deep and delivered a head victory over the mile-cutter to capture the week's top test for female pacers.

Thursday's tally was the first at Vernon, but the third this season and 15th lifetime for the bay daughter of Pro Bono Best-Camus, who is owned and trained by Whittemore's dad, Dennis.

The tight triumph completed a double on the program for the Whittemore's, who also got a 1:58.2 victory from the 6-year-old trotter Magic in Thursday's $3,200 seventh session.

Josh Marks, the meet's leading reinsman after 21 programs with 63 first-place finishes, won four of the evening's 10 races, while top provisional driver Leon Bailey earned two scores, as did pace-setting trainer Tracy Brainard.

DOWNS DOINGS-

Marks has posted four tallies on a single Vernon program five different times this season...The double was Whittemore's fourth at the meet...Bailey, last year's leading provisional pilot with 24 wins, is tops in that department again this season with seven successes...Friday's 10-event line-up, which includes the week's top trotting test in race six, will begin at 6:55...Additional information regarding the track's 57th season and its casino can be obtained at www.vernondowns.com.
