New Zealand harness racing superstar Christen Me saved the Kiwi's from 7-0 hiding in today's (Sunday March 3) Group One features by taking out the Form 700 Chariots Of Fire

Perfectly handled by Dexter Dunn, the recent Hondo Grattan Stakes winner rated a sizzling 1:50.5 for the 1609m, beating compatriot Smolda by 2.25m with classy Victorian Restrepo another 2m back in third place.

Christen Me settled one out and one back early before taking the ‘death seat' at the 800m and forging to the lead on the home turn.

His winning time smashed Excel Stride's Australasian four-year-old mile record by a full second.

"I knew I had a good enough horse to do a bit of work," Dunn said. "He's still really a baby and hasn't had that many starts.

"In 12 months' time he might be in the next race (Inter Dominion)."

Christen Me took his record to 10 wins and two placings from just 14 starts, for prizemoney earnings of $225,118.

Christchurch trainer Cran Dalgety was thrilled with the effort and has ambitious plans for the son of Christian Cullen.

"That's a relief. Everyone thought he could win so to do it is fantastic," Dalgety said.

"With a bit of luck we could be back here next year in the main race."
