In an exciting addition to the Cranbourne harness racing training complex, Horse Gym Australia have installed a state-of-the-art equine treadmill which is now available to each of the trainers at Cranbourne.

The treadmill, which was originally sent to Sydney to help Ridgehead Cahore prepare for the Pryde’s EasiFeed Great Southern Star whilst in quarantine, has had rave reviews.

It helped Ridgehead Cahore turn in a slashing effort in his GSS heat and now the Cranbourne trainers are taking advantage according to Armin Fuernrohr from Horse Gym Australia.

“It really is a treadmill for horses of any discipline – even thoroughbred horses – the main advantage is that you can use it to supplement trackwork or on wet days or wet weeks, you can still make sure your horse is fit for the races,” Fuernrohr said.

“It’s been a long journey for the treadmill, it started in Sydney for Ridgehead Cahore’s quarantine period and now it’s all the way back in Cranbourne where the on-course trainers can take advantage of it.

“There are plenty of scenarios when the treadmill can be vital to a training regime and being able to have one at Cranbourne can only benefit the trainers down there.”

Horse Gym Australia couldn’t have been more accommodating in providing and relocating the treadmill to Cranbourne for the industry.

Harness Racing Victoria’s Chief Operating Officer Brant Dunshea explained acquiring the treadmill, which has been well received by the Cranbourne club, has only been made possible with the help of the State Government through a $22,903 Victorian Racing Industry Fund (VRIF) Infrastructure grant.

“As we all know the Premier and Minister for Racing Dr. Denis Napthine has been a wonderful supporter of the Victorian Racing Industry through the establishment of the VRIF Program,” Dunshea said.

“This is another step forward for the Cranbourne training facility which is firing on all cylinders at the moment and we really can’t thank both the State Government and Horse Gym Australia enough.”

Cranbourne is sure to be in the headlines in the coming weeks with their Trotters Cup just over a week away. In what may be turn out to be an interesting twist the first horse to step onto the new treadmill earlier this year, Swedish import Ridgehead Cahore, is likely to feature in the Cranbourne Trotters Cup after a slashing Shepparton trial victory against the pacers this week.

Club Chief Executive David Scott was pleasantly surprised with news of the treadmill addition and was looking forward to the coming months for the community.

“It’s a fabulous piece of equipment for us to use, it complements our other training facilities really well and just gives our trainers another option out here,” Scott said.

“The centre has only been open since September last year and we’ve just recently had our 16th winner and the results the trainers are getting with their relatively small teams speak for themselves.

“We’ve worked hard to build the Cranbourne Trotters Cup to Group 2 status over the years and it has really become a feature of our winter and a race we really look forward to.”
