Hall of Fame harness driver Michel Lachance, at age 62, scored his second straight Kentucky Futurity Trot victory, capturing the third jewel of the Trotting Triple Crown with Creatine over a sloppy track at the Red Mile in Lexington, KY Sunday.
After finishing second in his $79,050 elimination heat, Creatine drew post four for the $368,900 Futurity final. Both Wheeling N Dealin and Lindy’s True Grit scratched out of the final.
The race started off with the favorite, Royalty For Life, and driver Brian Sears going right to the lead with Spider Blue Chip and Ron Pierce settling into the two-hole to the opening quarter mile in :27.4. They raced that way to the half mile in :55.4 with no movement from the back of the pack.
By the final turn Your So Vain and driver Tim Tetrick came first-over and that gave great cover on the outside to Creatine and Lachance as the field sped by the three-quarters in 1:24.
As they started down the stretch, Creatine had tipped to the outside and was building up steam. All Laid Out (Dave Miller) was coming from the outside too as Royalty For Life began to fade and Spider Blue Chip had little racing room.
Then at the finish Creatine and Lachance pulled away to win by one length with All Laid Out second and Spider Blue Chip third.
For Creatine, a three-year-old colt by Andover Hall from the Muscles Yankee mare, Berry Nice Muscles, it was his seventh win this year. He is trained by Bob Stewart and was bred and is owned by the Diamond Creek Racing Stable of Wellsville, PA. Sent off at odds of 15-1, Creatine paid $33.80 to win.
