While Friday’s feature race, a Claiming Handicap-prices $50,000-$60,000, wasn’t quite a one-horse event, it certainly seemed that the pacers were going to have to do a lot to beat Only Choice.
It turned out that they didn’t have to do anything. Only Choice beat himself.
He grabbed the lead soon after the three-quarter pole and took a length and three-quarter lead into the stretch, seemingly pacing easily, but he broke stride near the sixteenth pole and the race was all over at that point.
E. Ferrari, M. DeVience, J. Butenschoen, and C. Collins Jr.s Cold Sweat, the second choice in the wagering, had been tracking the pace. It appeared that he had little chance to get the win but he got a new lease on life when Only Choice broke stride and driver Dale Hiteman got busy.
Cold Sweat, trained by John Butenschoen, got up for a three-quarter length score, stopping the timer in 1:51.3, and paying $7.80 for the win.
