HARRINGTON, Del. – The second leg of the Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund (DSBF) stakes for 2-year-old trotters was contested with five divisions Wednesday at Harrington Raceway.
The fillies were the first to take to the track in two divisions featured second and fourth on the 15-race program.
The first division was also the second fastest on the program as owner/trainer/driver Bryan Truitt’s Way Over Paid ($4) atoned for a break last week at odds-on with a wire-to-wire win in 2:02.1. The Giant Hit-sired filly assumed command early from post two and never looked back in her open length win over Kelsey’s Commando.
Art Stafford Jr. and Wyatt Starkey’s Overnight Hit ($24, Stafford Jr.) scored an upset in the second division in 2:04.3. The daughter of Giant Hit capitalized on a break in stride early by heavily favored Canterbury Girl. Pacesetter Classy N Quik was running on fumes in the stretch and Overnight Hit charged home on top over Bella’s Punkin. Stafford Jr. also trains the freshman trotter.
Owner/trainer/driver Carlo Poliseno’s Briefs Or Boxers ($3.80) took the first colt division in 2:05.3. The Political Briefing gelding sat in the pocket behind pacesetter Boo’s The Boss throughout before surging by in the stretch for an open length win. Boo’s the Boss held second.
Winbak Farm’s Call Me Hal ($2.80, Jeff Fout) was the fastest winner of the 2-year-old trotters, as he prevailed in dominant fashion in 2:02. The CR Commando gelding was a wire-to-wire winner over What A Hit. Trained by driver Fout, it was Call Me Hal’s first lifetime win in three starts.
The final division was an eventful one as favorite LG’s Pride was taken out of contention early when fellow contender Winbak Charles M went off stride at the start and carried him wide into the first turn. Meanwhile, Syl King’s Whichwayrightrleft ($23.20, Ross Wolfenden) was sent immediately for the lead and never relented in his 2:03 triumph over Bosston Bnz. LG’s Pride finished fourth but was placed third ahead of Winbak Charles M for the interference.
