Harness racing in New Zealand is in mourning today (Tuesday September 21) with the loss of well known and respected harness racing identity Dave Carville who died suddenly this morning as a result of a suspected heart attack (yet to be confirmed).

Dave Carville was known to many as a larger than life and vibrant individual involved in a variety of aspects within the industry. Dave started up the company International Cargo Express some 16 years ago, it has since grown into one of the largest freight forwarding companies in New Zealand.

ICE Bloodstock Ltd became a division of the company and is run by Dave's wife Katie and brother Barry. It is responsible for the transportation of horses right throughout the world.

Dave and Katie have been major contributors to the industry for many years now and were the major sponsor for the 2010 Harness Racing Awards. The Carville's are synonymous and well recognised as owners with the brand names "Ohoka" or "Millwood" attached to most of their stock.

More recently former star juvenile Ohoka Arizona had begun a stallion career while still actively racing, and made an appearance as recently as last Friday night's Addington meeting, Dave as always there in support.

Darryl Brown of Wai Eyre Stud, where Ohoka Arizona stood, enjoyed a close association with the both Dave and Katie Carville.

"It's devastating news for all of us who knew Dave. It's a terrible time for his family and they are all struggling to come to terms with the loss," Brown said.

Dave Carville is survived by his wife Katie, son Adam and daughters Libby, Paige and Ashley.
