David Waite cautioned re purple poppy flower

Harness Racing New South wales today (Monday December 18) conducted an inquiry to the reasons that a post race urine sample taken from Emilys Dance following Race 5 at Canberra on Monday, 19 September 2011 until analysis reported the presence of "Morphine".

Prior to the inquiry today, HRNSW Chairman of Stewards, MR Bill Cable conducted a stable inspection on the property of Mr Waite's, and during the course of this inspection secured samples of a purple poppy flower, which was growing in and around the paddocks. This flower sample was analysis, and found to contain morphine, codeine and papaverine.

urther evidence was tendered today by Trainer Mr Waite regarding the presence of the flowers on his property.

r Waite pleaded guilty to a charge under Australian Harness Racing Rule 190(1),(2) & (4), that as the licensed trainer of Emily Dance he did present that mare to race at Canberra on 19 September 2011, when a post race sample taken from it, upon analysis reported the presence of the prohibited substance "Morphine".

tewards took no action against Mr Waite as in their opinion based on the evidence, the horse Emily Dance ingested the substance morphine through eating of the purple poppy flowers.

r Waite was however cautioned that he must take all reasonable measures in the future to ensure that his horses cannot be contaminated.

Emilys Dance was disqualified under AHRR 195 from Race 5, HR Photos Pace, at Canberra on 19 September 2011.
