Last year Marulan harness racing trainer Dean Atkinson qualified Erics Legend for the Chariots of Fire at Tabcorp Park Menangle, this year he is aiming to do the same with talented four year old Mapua Legend.

The son of In The Pocket has only had four starts for Atkinson winning three of them and is scheduled to line up again on Friday at Menangle.

“Mapua Legend is a very fast horse and he will only get better as he learns about being a racehorse” Atkinson said.

“He might end up putting egg on my face on Friday but in my opinion he is a better horse than Erics Legend and he has done a great job for my stable.”

Mapua Legend was formerly trained in Victoria by Ian Frost and arrived at Atkinson’s stables just before Christmas last year.

“Ian and the rest of the owners sent him up to me with the Chariots in mind and he has just continued to improve since arriving although I have been working on a few little issues with him because he was very keen when he arrived, can pull and has been hanging in his races as well.”

“When he actually does everything right in a race he is going to record a very fast time, even quicker than the 1:53.1 he went two starts ago.”

Atkinson has already mapped out a campaign in the lead up to the Chariots Of Fire on April 30th.

“He will start this week and then I will look to space his runs before having three runs in three weeks for the Chariots.”

“He’s only a little horse, he looks like he is pretty fit at the moment but I don’t want to knock him around by over racing him.”

Mapua Legend is in race one on Friday night at Menangle with the race due to begin at 6:40pm.
