After coming up a half-length short in leg one, Deep Impact wasn't messing around Thursday evening at the harness racing meeting at Mohawk Racetrack in round two of the Define The World series.
A field of seven rookie trotters contested the $12,000 second leg of the three-week series event.
The Brad Maxwell trainees Bucketlist Hanover and Deep Impact finished first and second, respectively, in the first leg and both were factors once again Thursday.
Bucketlist Hanover was sent off as the even-money favourite, but got away seventh and last heading into the first turn, while Deep Impact was situated fourth.
In the second-quarter, driver Steve Condren sent Deep Impact to the lead and grabbed control from Dancers Touch at the half in :59.3.
Bucketlist Hanover and driver Trevor Henry came charging up on the outside around the final turn, but were forced three-wide before the three-quarter pole when Dancers Touch came out of the pocket to challenge Deep Impact.
After a three-quarter time of 1:29.1, Dancers Touch went off-stride in the stretch, while Deep Impact extended his lead over Bucketlist Hanover.
Deep Impact finished off the mile with a :27.4 final-quarter to score his first-career win by a length and a half.
Lean Hanover made a late charge to get up for second ahead of Bucketlist Hanover.
A son of Donato Hanover, Deep Impact is owned by Van Camp Trotting Corp, Timothy Murray, Doug Millard and Maxwell.
He was a $65,000 yearling purchase at last year's Lexington Selected Sale.
Deep Impact now has a victory and a runner-up finish in two career starts and earnings of $9,000.
A $2 win ticket on the Maxwell trainee paid $12.10.
The final of the Define The World series will take place next Thursday (August 20).
