A horse has been put down after a serious crash at the Century Downs racetrack in Calgary, which also sent two people to hospital, officials say.
Three horses were downed, and three drivers flipped into the air during the spectacular crash.
It came during the eighth race, two drivers – Ed Hensley and Ryan Grundy – were taken to hospital with a possible rib fracture and concussion, said Century Downs track superintendent Don Monkman.
The five-year-old pacer Pass The Port had to be euthanized due to a knee injury. The Freedoms Pass-Newport Beauty gelding was a seven-time career winner with over $85,000 in earnings for owner, breeder and trainer Sam Johnson.
