It was a sad day at Alabar NZ on Thursday last week with Earl having to be humanely put down at the grand age of 26. Earl retired from service in the 2010/11 season and has been enjoying his well earned retirement since then. He is now buried at Alabar NZ alongside the champion stallions Vance Hanover, New York Motoring and Astreos.
In his day, Earl was a sensational racehorse winning the Breeders Crown and being one of the first trotters to venture to Europe to represent North America in the major classics.
A successful sire and broodmare sire in North America (siring two millionaires), he has certainly left his mark on Australasian trotting - the outstanding juvenile Galleons Assassin, the Dominion Handicap winner Mountbatten, the current Group 1 winning machine Vulcan and the warrior Earl Of Mot being the obvious standouts.
A horse with a lot of personality, Earl was very much a favourite around Alabar NZ. He'll be missed. We look forward to one of his daughters leaving a champion by our new flagship trotting sire Majestic Son - we think he would like that.
