The first South Island harness racing juveniles to step out publicly in the new season have been at the workouts in the last few weeks.
Yesterday at Ashburton "Art Banker" a 2yo filly by Art Official scooted over a mile by herself in 1;59.8 with closing sectionals of 57.0 for the 800m and 27.0 for the 400m. Trainer Gavin Smith was very happy with the run saying "she does have a lot of speed".
A race later and Gavin had a 2yo colt by Auckland Reactor and also a 2yo gelding by Rock N Roll Heaven racing. They finished second and third behind the Tim Butt trained Tribeca who won the 1609m race in 2:01.2 speeding over the last 800m in 57.1 and 400m in 26.8.
Gavin thought both his went good. "The Auckland Reactor colt actually has a bit of a cough this week and went better last week" he said. "He will be turned out and prepared for the "Young Gun" series if not sold prior".
The Rock N Roll Heaven gelding might have one more workout and then he too will be set for the "Young Gun" series.
Gavin said all three of his 2yos at the Ashburton workouts were for sale.
