It would be a fair enough statement to say; former New Zealand harness racing champion Elsu, hasn't to date, made the impact at stud that many thought he would. Sure he has left 168 NZ bred winners and some handy types like Anvil Best Ever, Stormy Sirocco, Miss Elsie, Wee Brother and Lucie Boshier; however, nothing that resembles his freakish ability or Nelson Mandela sized heart.

I know it seems a strange thing to have to say but people forget just how good Elsu was. When the now 13-year-old Falcon Seelster entire broke down and had to be retired to stud, he was on an eight win streak, which included the Auckland Cup, three Interdominion heats and the final, the Hunter Cup, and the Auckland City Of sails. The closest any horse had got to him in those eight races was one and a quarter lengths. He was the best New Zealand had seen and still probably has seen since Christian Cullen, and with his breeding and credentials, I couldn't see a single reason in the world why he couldn't do a similar job at stud.

To put it bluntly he just hasn't, and his stud career to date has slightly tarnished his name.

I'm hoping for his sake it's not going to be a similar case to Iraklis and Ill Vicolo. When someone say's to you "I'm breeding from an Iraklis mare or an Ill Vicolo mare," in all honesty, do you think gee Iraklis and Ill Vicolo, weren't they two amazing horses or do you think yuck?

Elsu's last week efforts are sure to help his case. Out of the three two-year-old races run in New Zealand during the weekend, Elsu sired the winner of two of them.

On Friday night, at Alexandra Park God Blessed, a daughter of Elsu won the first Young Guns fillies' heat for trainer Wayne Anstis and reinsman Jay Abernathy. She was impressive showing gate speed and leading from go to woe, running a bit of time in the process and closing off with a slick last 400m of 27.6.

Then at the other end of the country, Invercargill to be exact, Elsu repeated the dose in the first race on Saturday when Simply Susational was successful in the Cruickshank Pryde Two-Year-Old Mobile Pace for trainer David Mitchell and reinsman Jonny Cox.

Maybe, just maybe, one of these youngsters will be the horse that Elsu sires that resembles his own ability?

The other two-year-old race that was run during the weekend was another Young Guns fillies' heat that was won impressively by Angelina Jolie, a daughter of Art Major.
