Italy's top harness racing driver, Enrico Bellei, repeated his victory of two years ago in the European Driving Championship, and thus will again represent Italy in the 2013 World Driving Championship, to be contested in France this coming June.
Bellei finished atop a field of 12 drivers who competed this past weekend at Bahrenfeld in Hamburg, Germany. He scored 94 points over eight races and defeated Sweden's Björn Goop by four points.
The top six finishers in the European Championship will join representatives of the United States, Australia, New Zealand and the defending world driving champion, Canada's Jody Jamieson, at next June's World Championship. The United States' representative, to be selected by the U.S. Trotting Association, will be announced in the coming weeks.
Besides Bellei and Goop, the rest of the European World Championship contingent, in order of their finish in this past weekend's European tournament, will include Austria's Gerhard Mayr, France's Pierre Vercruysse, Denmark's Rene Kjær and Spain's Antonio Frontera Pocovi.ier this month, New Zealand announced the selection of David Butcher.
Details of the Driving Championship have yet to be announced, but it will be contested between June 7 and 15 at various tracks in France.
