In March 2013 Racing and Wagering Western Australia introduced the Epona Mares Credit Scheme whereby an amount equivalent to 10% of the winning stake was put aside for the particular winning mare's subsequent breeding career.
The 10% was in addition to the winning stake up to a maximum amount of $5,000 and the first claims are beginning to be processed.
The credits follow the mare if she is sold and have the effect of adding to her value should the owners who raced the mare not wish to breed from her.
The success of the Epona scheme is reflected in the number of requests for details concerning the level of a mare's credits and this information is now available through the RWWA website on both the Harness Breeding and Breeding and Breeding Incentives page
Or on the Harness Racing Information page.
The Epona information will update automatically any winning performance in Western Australia by a mare is accepted into the system or any credit is claimed.
