WILKES-BARRE PA -- Star trotter Father Patrick ($2.80) obliterated the world record for two-year-old colt trotters with a 1:52.1 victory in the sole $25,000 Breeders Crown elimination for two-year-old trotting colts Friday at Moehgan Sun at Pocono Downs.
Driver and trainer , who both had two wins for the night, saw their colt, now 9 for 10 lifetime, lower the divisional world record for the 1:53.2 set by Break The Bank K in winning the 2010 Crown Championship at this very track.
Nuncio ( ) rocketed out to early command, while Gingras guiding "Patrick" into the pocket from the tough outside post nine. Nuncio absolutely flew on the lead, tripping the timer in 26.2 and 54, with Father Patrick tightening on the leader considerably by the 1:22.4 three-quarters. Gingras handled Father Patrick confidently in the last quarter, and Nuncio proved to be a very stubborn foe in the stretch, with the winner getting clear only on the final 100 feet to win by a length. Another Transcript, Expressive Action, Southwind Spirit, Auspicious Hanover, and Muscle Network also qualified for the $500,000 Championship next Saturday. These top seven finishers join Credit Finisher and Don Dorado, who accepted a bye, in next week's Breeders Crown 2TC Championship.
Trainer Takter noted after the race that he didn't take the "bye" he could have as the field's top moneyearner because "I didn't want to take a chance of getting post nine in the final. Nuncio fought hard to the wire, but this is a special horse to me, as good as , maybe a little better, at this point of their careers."
Father Patrick completed a sweep of the five Friday Crown events for Pennsylvania-sired horses, doing "poppas" , , , , and proud.
