Not only will Hawthorne’s Night of Champions feature eight races boasting purses estimated at $100,000 each, along with six great supporting events, but a full slate of promotions and entertainment is also on tap.
First of all, for that night only, Hawthorne will play host to 14 live races, with the post of the first race moved to 7.00 pm, forty minutes earlier than usual.
The world-famous “Hot To Trot Pyrotechnics Show” is likely to captivate kids of all ages.
Vince Silvestro and the wonderful Hand Me Silver will perform immediately following the eighth race of the night. The track will go dark as Vince races his horse around the track with fireworks and flares blazing.
During this performance, Silvestro stands on the shafts of his racing bike, holding the reins in his teeth, and electronically shoots off over 2000 rounds of fireworks from a platform attached to the back of his bike.
He does all this while holding marine candles, 15,000 candle power each, in his hands.
It’s a sight to behold.
There is so much more to this powerful pair but space limitations prevent going into it right now. But, we will get more in depth with their incredible story, especially their work with special needs children, in a later program.
Touching lightly on some of the other things happening on the Night Of Champions:
COLGATE COUNTRY SHOWDOWN:
This Country Music contest will bring the area’s best amateur performers to compete for the title of Top Country Performer. Contestants will perform between races.
PICK 8 CHALLENGE:
This is a FREE contest. Using the same format as our Pick 5 Challenge, contestants will try to pick the winners of eight straight races, five through 12.
Be the only one to pick all eight winners and you could take the entire $4,000 prize.
Place the winners in the designated bonus spots and you could double your take to $8000.
Entry forms will be included with your program.
Bring the kids! Free Pony Rides on the East side of the apron from 6.00 pm to 10.30 pm.
Plus, inside Hawthorne’s live racing programs for the nights of July 29, 31, and August 3, a special insert will be placed featuring a Night Of Champions logo which can be coloured and entered for judging on the August 5.
Three $100 Savings Bonds will be awarded, one for each age category.
We’ll cover more of the “happenings” on August 5 in Sunday’s program.
