Some great stories come out of harness racing and one of these from last Friday’s Tabcorp Park fixture concerns the Moss family from Grenville in the Central Highlands District of the state.
Trainer Greg Moss and reinswoman wife Debra prepare Katelin Brooke, an eight year old Kiwi bred mare who was successful in taking the $5198 first place cheque for winning the Renown Silverware Trotters Final for T0 & T1 class over 2240 metres, giving the family consisting of Greg, Debra and daughters Donna and Kristy a most satisfying and exciting moment.
In particular Kristy who races the Kiwi bred 8-Y-0 daughter of Earl and Kanuka Lass.
Starting from outside the front row, Katelin Brooke was sent forward to park in the open outside the poleline leader and favourite Pipe Me Home, before taking cover mid-race on the well tried Glorious Finale who was going for a hat-trick of wins.
In what was the “drive of the night”, Katelin Brooke ($32.00) was switched down to trail the leader approaching the home turn which had kicked away appearing to have the race in her keeping.
Using the sprint lane, Katelin Brooke rallied over the concluding stages to record a “pin-head” victory (actually a nose) over Savannah Jay Jay from last which weaved in-between runners, Lazy Sunday off a three wide trail last lap was a head away third and Columbias Deejay a neck back in fourth place. The mile rate 2-04.4.
The win capped off a wonderful week for Kristy who is blind, as she received her BA Degree for Social Sciences a few days back.
Debra was a pioneer for women in the early days of harness racing in NSW where she was based, competing at many of the Sunday Gymkhana meetings on a regular basis.
