Recent 2YO Sweepstakes winner Sweet Pea Jasper tuned up for her final feature race assault with an impressive all the way win in a heat of the $30,000 Evicus Stakes over 2090 metres at Tattersall's Park in Hobart last Sunday night.

With experienced reinsman Paul Ashwood in the sulky, Sweet Pea Jasper cruised to the front soon after the start from her outside front-row draw and with her rivals prepared to race in single file for the 1200m metres she was untroubled to take a handy advantage into the home turn the last time.

Jazzy Jane trailed the leader throughout and when her driver James Rattray eased off to challenge 600 metres from home the tempo lifted significantly.

Jazzy Jane loomed large at the top of the home straight but Sweet Pea Jasper answered the challenge and went on to defeat Jazzy Jane by 1-1/2 metres with Miss Guenevere almost two metres away third.

Neither the winner nor runner-up was pushed right out so they will both go into the final in a fortnight with more to give.

The remaining Evicus heat was won by outsider Really Feisty, although she won like a short-price favourite.

Really Feisty (Justin Campbell) was forced to face the breeze for most of the race but the well bred filly made light of the task.

When her trainer-driver Campbell called on her to extend turning for homer she burst clear and had enough in reserve to stave off a late challenge from the odds-on favourite

tswhatilikeaboutyou and Maggie On Fire.

The winning margin was a metre with the same margin to third.

Both heat winners clocked mile rates of 2m.02.8 and only one-tenth of a second separated their last halves (800m).

The final should be a thriller with the barrier draw likely to determine which filly starts favourite.
