Melton co-trainers Maree and John Caldow scored an impressive victory with Dream Vacation/Skye Rocket gelding Mister Scorcher in the Geoff Durn Photography 3-Y-0 Trotters Handicap over 2100 metres at Charlton on Wednesday August 17.

Making his race debut, Mister Scorcher from outside the front row spent most of the race in the coveted one/one position trailing the roughie Miss In Majorca.

Easing three wide in the last lap, Mister Scorcher finished his race off in grand style to defeat Poetic Castle along the sprint lane after trailing the pacemaker and third placegetter Sarkava. The mile rate 2-09.6.

Pipers Creek trainer Tony Xiriha was in the winners stall when evergreen 7-Y-0 Panorama/Myrniong Scooter gelding Myrniong Panorama greeted the judge in the Hankook Pacers Handicap for C1 or better class over 2100 metres, much to the delight of owner Joe Farrugia.

Taking a concession for Korweinguboora based Jaimie-Lee King on top of a dramatic drop down in grade following several unsuccessful outings, Myrniong Panorama from barrier three was driven hard to arrest the lead away from Nova Arama inside him running into the first turn.

Given an easy time through the middle stages, Myrniong Panorama was tackled from all directions approaching the home turn, before refusing to give in on straightening to record a game victory over Boy From Ipanema (three wide home turn) which may have taken a slender lead on turning, with Nova Arama using the sprint lane to no avail in finishing third. The mile rate 2-02.2.

It was Myrniong Panorama’s 14th victory in 170 outings.

Melton based Robbie O’Connell snared the Mark Binns 2-Y-0 Pace over 1609 metres at Charlton with Grinfromeartoear/Tess Drive gelding Driving Witness at gigantic odds of $48.90.

Driven by Rodney Petroff, Driving Witness was restrained from gate two, settling mid-field in the moving line.

Hopelessly boxed in for the final circuit with a wall of horses around him, Petroff had to wait until the home turn to gain a clear passage on the leaders and when taken four wide on straightening, finished at a great rate to score from Dee Cees Desire off a three wide trail last lap and Classy Western in a slick rate of 1-57.6.

St Arnaud trainer Brian Kiesey has been having a ball with his trotters of late and landed the Doreen Anderson Trotters Handicap for T0 or better class over 2100 metres with 6-Y-0 Digger Almahurst/Flying Candy mare Candy Digger.

Driven as usual by Ararat’s Mick Bellman, Candy Digger from barrier three stepped cleanly to possie three back along the markers and when extricated into the clear approaching the home turn three wide, ran on stoutly to gain the day in advance of Windy Dawn (one/one) and Strapperama which faced the breeze for the final circuit off a 30 metre backmark. The mile rate 2-08.5.
