Five of the seven divisions of the New York State Fair races contested at harness racing's Tioga Downs on Sunday afternoon produced new lifetime marks; all three divisions of the 3 year old colt trotters produced new marks and two of the four divisions for the 3 year old filly trotters produced new lifetime marks.
The record lowering action started off in the 1st race of the afternoon in the first division of the 3 year old colt trot. The race was won by Big Sky Domino, the betting public's 2nd choice. The gelded son of CR Excaliber-Her majesty sat last through fractions of 28.2, 57.4, 1:27.1 before driver Jordan Stratton pulled the right line for a three-wide move at the top of the stretch to sweep the field before stopping the teletimer at 1:57.3. The win was his 4th in 7 starts in 2009 and a new lifetime mark.
The 2nd division of the 3 year colt trot produced the 2nd lowered mark of the day when Rookie Mistake and Jim Morrill Jr. coasted through fractions of 29.3, 59.3, and 1:29.1 on the front end before crossing the wire in a new lifetime mark of 1:58.0. The win was the 6th of the year and 3rd in row for the son of CR Excaliber-Nowhere Fast.
The 3rd race and 1st division of the 3 year old filly trotters produced the 3rd consecutive new lifetime mark of the day when Winbak Roberta stopped the timer in 1:58.1. Driver Pat Berry had the daughter of-Summer Belle on the gate and to the front through fractions of 29.4, 1:00.1, 1:29.0 before cruising home in 29.1.
The Ice Queen used a first over move in the 2nd division of the 3 year old filly trot to give driver Jim Morrill Jr his second win of the day. The daughter of-Spice On Ice sat 5th past the opening quarter of 29.1. Morrill then used a slow grind to wear down the pacesetting Porque through middle half fractions of 59.2 and 1:28.1 before eventually clearing and opening up on the field to a six length victory in 1:58.1.
Jeff Gregory and Hitontheflipside used a quick 2nd quarter brush to power their way thru fractions of 30.0, 59.2, and 1:28.1 before stopping the timer at 1:57.1 for the 4th new lifetime mark of the New York State Fair. The son of-Lynden upped his win total to six in 2009 and increased his career earnings to $126,198.
The 5th and final new lifetime mark of the day was produced when Contag Way and driver/trainer John Stark Jr controlled the pace of the 2nd division of filly trotters through fractions of 30.0, 1:00.4, and 1:29.4 before crossing the wire in 1:58.2. The win was the 2nd of the year for the daughter of-Bwt Maija and the only real upset of the day as Contag Way paid $24.40 to win.
The final division of the New York State Fair on Sunday was contested in the 9th race when heavily favored Brandnewgirlfriend crossed the wire first in 1:57.3. Regular pilot Brain Mattison handled the lines for trainer Paul Kelley's star Sire Stakes performer. The daughter of-Tiffany Gold is ten of eleven this year and undefeated in New York Sire Stakes action while bankrolling $145,693.
In overnight action, Redneck Outlaw lowered his lifetime mark to 1:53.3 while helping driver Matt Kakaley to his driving double and Sheer Brilliance tied the track mark for 4 year old pacing geldings when he and driver Fern Paquet Jr stopped the timer in 1:51.3 in the winners over pace.
