Hambletonian Society director emeritus and former president of Hanover Shoe Farms, Paul E. Spears, 88, has died.
His wife Jo said that he was at his hunting camp with his son, Pete, and suffered an apparent heart attack. He was evacuated to the Hershey Medical Center and passed away at 5 a.m., eastern, this morning, Aug. 11.
Funeral arrangements have not been announced, but it is anticipated that a memorial service may take place this coming Wednesday.
"I knew Paul for a long time and always respected his many contributions and devotion to harness racing," USTA President Phil Langley said. "His time at Hanover, the Hambletonian Society, the Trotting Horse Museum, the Pennsylvania racing program and amatuer driving events were just a few of his interests. He spanned harness racing, from before the advent of pari-mutuels to the present day. His advice will be sorely missed."
