The new season is only a couple of weeks away. The first phase of stakes rises commences on September 1 and then on September 12 we recognise the champion horses and participants of the 2012/13 season at the Industry Awards Night at Tabcorp Park.
2013 Blue Chip Farms Breeders Crown
Despite a bleak weather forecast a better than expected crowd turned out at Melton for an outstanding race day.
To highlight the truly national and international appeal of the Breeders Crown, for the nine Group 1 races the honours were shared equally between Victoria, New South Wales and New Zealand 3 winners each.
Belinda McCarthy was the only multiple winning trainer (Bling It On and Ideal Scott) and Greg Sugars was the only driver to steer 2 winners (Rosalie Bay and Quite a Moment).
With his win on Whereibylong, Gavin Lang became the first driver to win 10 Breeders Crown Finals. Chris Alford is his nearest rival with 8 winners and John Caldow moved to third on 6 winners with his win on Carpenters Daughter.
In defending his crown, Bit of a Legend became the ninth horse to win Multiple Breeders Crown titles, however he is the first pacing colt to win back to back.
The $1.5m stakes on offer on Super Sunday were distributed as follows: Victoria $610,000, NSW $440,000, New Zealand $360,000, Tasmania $45,000, South Australia $10,000 and Queensland $5,000.
John McCarthy (Bling It On) and David Jack (Im Stately) drove their first Breeders Crown champion.
Finally I would like to thank Blue Chip Farms for their continued sponsorship of the Crown. Blue Chip stallions were to fore on Super Sunday courtesy of support sponsors Alabar, Woodlands and Pepper Tree.
One of Blue Chips stallions American Ideal had 3 finalists (Bling It On, Ideal Scott and Besotted) winning 2 races including a quinella. He was the only multiple winning sire.
Breeders Crown – Ballarat
On behalf of HRV I would like to congratulate Ballarat on the way the Club promoted and conducted the Breeders Crown Semi-Finals.
As expected Greg Moy and his Committee were well prepared and rewarded with a big crowd with plenty of on course activities.
Wagering Turnover of $133,000 on course was a very strong performance. 900 meals were consumed plus food and beverage sales were almost double to corresponding meeting last year.
The Ballarat track was in excellent condition and raced fairly.
The Club should be proud of its contribution to the 2013 Blue Chip Farms Breeders Crown.
With thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Breeders Crown by Blue Chip Farms, and with the support of Alabar, Woodlands and Pepper Tree, several stallion services have been made available to be purchased by tender.

Chairman of Stewards
Following the completion of the Breeders Crown. HRV’s Shane Larkins has advised that he will be stepping down from his position as Chairman of Stewards.
Shane will continue to play a senior role on the stewards panel and he will revert to the position of Senior Steward.
HRV will soon be advertising for a new Chairman of Stewards, however for the interim period Neal Conder will assume the higher duties as the Acting Chairman of Stewards.
It is a great opportunity for Neal to show his leadership talents and I wish him well in this important role.
Together with Deputy Chairman Nick Murray we have an excellent leadership team. Nick has expressed his intention to remain in the Deputy role supporting Neal.
I would like to thank Shane Larkins for his dedication and commitment to the role and I am sure he will carry those attributes over to his new position. I admire him for his honesty and courage to instigate the move. He has written to me saying he is committed to maintaining high standards of integrity in our industry and he will also be a great support for Neal.
