CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – Euchred took control early and never relinquished it on his way to victory in the Saturday evening harness racing feature at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
David Dowling sent his trainee to the front in the $2,900 preferred pace and laid down splits of 28.1, 57.1 and 1:25.4 with being heeded by a challenger. The time of the mile was closed out in 1:54.2 with Revenant (Driven by Adam Merner) was second and Rose Run Quest (Marc Campbell) completed the triactor. Euchred is owned by Kayla Habicht Walker of Inverness, N.S.
Driver Gilles Barrieau scored four wins on the evening card including a win with A Grand Terror in one of two Maritime Breeder's eliminations for three-year-old pacing colts. The son of Camystic stopped the clock in 1:58.2 in his $3,000 elimination for owners Wayne MacRae of Fall River, N.S., and Robert Tilley and Lester Mott of Saint John, N.B. Whipple Effect was second in that elimination while Dusty Lane Cortez and Lets Get Pickled also made next Saturday's finals.
Barrieau's other wins were with Brads Buddy in 1:57.2, Santanna Sass in 1:56.3 and with Sodwana Bay in the $2,800 Fillies and Mares Open with a clocking of 1:56.4.
Notorious won the other $3,000 Maritime Breeder's three-year-old pacing colt elimination in 1:58.2 for trainer-driver Campbell and owners Darryl and Gordon MacLean of Winsloe and Nova Scotia owner Shirley Symes of Springhill. Mrs Browns Boy got up for second with R Es Daz third and Red Dirt Boomer fourth to make the final.
Trainer Joe Baxter of Windsor, N.S., swept the three-year-old pacing filly Maritime Breeder's eliminations as Im A Miracle prevailed by a neck in 1:59.2 for driver Dale Spence and owner Gary Cave of Halifax, N.S. Arc Light was a hard closing second with Therealdeal third and Woodmere Tango fourth.
Elm Grove Nellie completed the Baxter double in the other $3,000 elimination with Walter Cheverie supplying the winning drive in 1:59.2 for owners Jennifer Baxter and Gregory Francis of Windsor, N.S. Cheeky Cherry hung on for second with the final spots going to Howmac Sabrina and Woodmere Oleksiak.
